Relationship Attachments

Relationship attachment injuries are caused when the attachment bonding experience with your mother  is damaged or severed. It is especially damaging if it happened in the first two years of your life when your brain was still forming its neural connections. There are many reasons why this may have happened; a premature birth or infant hospitalisation, a mother dying, adoption, fostering or when a mother suffers from post natal depression or when a mother lacks maternal care and knowledge and of course when a mother is unkind or cruel or overly critical. A relationship attachment injury can happen with a father too. In adult life this injury can happen if a relationship was abusive or with a relationship betrayal or bitter break up.

When a relationship attachment injury occurs in infancy it causes the child’s brain to ‘wire’ up in a survival response whereby the infant’s experience of the world is that it is an unsafe place, creating stress and anxiety at a very early age. The stress prevents the body from producing the calming hormones that a securely attached infant’s body is able to produce.

This predisposes a baby to grow into an adult with high stress & anxiety, tendency to worry, insecurity, inability to trust, difficulty relaxing and addictive tendencies as a coping mechanism to soothe the internal stress. Relationship attachment injuries also explain why it is so common for people with this injury to struggle with depression, as well as having difficulty forming and maintaining long term relationships.

The first step in recovering from this injury is to understand it is not your fault, you are not useless mother. You have experienced a trauma. However it is in your own interest to get the help needed to recover and rebalance so you can be the best mother to your children and feel confident in yourself as a mother and a woman.

A relationship attachment injury causes you to live most, if not all, of your life in a stress response. Recovery is about learning to use new techniques to support you in every day life.

Chronic stress is a state of on-going physiological arousal. This happens when the body experiences so many stressors that the autonomic nervous system rarely has a chance to activate the relaxation response. The sympathetic nervous system is designed to help you cope with difficult times by preparing your body for action temporarily. Our body is in a fight/flight response; fight, flight, freeze or fold & appease.

The parasympathetic nervous system is designed to compensate and restore the body back to homeostasis. Calming and conserving energy and allowing healing to take place. At its core, stress is a mental perception of impending or existing personal difficulties. So treatment for stress should address the underlying thinking processes which lead to insurmountable stress levels causing mental, emotional & physical imbalance.
