When a relationship attachment injury occurs in infancy it causes the child’s brain to ‘wire’ up in a survival response whereby the infant’s experience of the world is that it is an unsafe place, creating stress and anxiety at a very early age. The stress prevents the body from producing the calming hormones that a securely attached infant’s body is able to produce.
This predisposes a baby to grow into an adult with high stress & anxiety, tendency to worry, insecurity, inability to trust, difficulty relaxing and addictive tendencies as a coping mechanism to soothe the internal stress. Relationship attachment injuries also explain why it is so common for people with this injury to struggle with depression, as well as having difficulty forming and maintaining long term relationships.
The first step in recovering from this injury is to understand it is not your fault, you are not useless mother. You have experienced a trauma. However it is in your own interest to get the help needed to recover and rebalance so you can be the best mother to your children and feel confident in yourself as a mother and a woman.
